The Building Regulations 2015: Approved Document M: Access to and use of buildings - Volume 1: Dwellings, 2015 edition
National Building Specification (NBS)
Approved Document M has been divided into two volumes. Document M1 is a new volume which covers dwellings and M2, which is a revision of the existing volume, covers buildings other than dwellings. Both are essential references for anyone undertaking building work.
This new Approved Document will take effect on 1 October 2015 for use in England. The 2004 edition of Approved Document M with the 2010 and 2013 amendments will continue to apply to work started before 1 October 2015 or work subject to a building notice, full plans application or initial notice submitted before that date.
This title supersedes The Building Regulations 2013: Approved Document M: Access to and use of Buildings (ISBN 9781859464878).
This new volume of Approved Document M supports requirements M4(1), M4(2) and M4(3) of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010. The main changes are:
Requirement M4 'Sanitary conveniences in dwellings' has been replaced by new requirements:
M4(1) Category 1: Visitable dwellings
M4(2) Category 2: Accessible and Adaptable dwellings
M4(3) Category 3: Wheelchair user dwellings
RRegulation M4(1) is mandatory for all new dwellings unless one of the optional requirements M4(2) or M4(3) applies.
The Building Regulations are concerned with protecting the health and safety of those in and around buildings. Anyone intending to carry out building work in England and Wales is required by law to obtain building control approval to ensure Regulations are complied with.
The Approved Documents provide technical guidance on ways of complying with the Building Regulations. They are continuously revised in line with new legislation. Therefore it is essential to keep fully updated with the latest editions and amendments.
