The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects cells of the immune system, destroying or impairing their function. As the infection progresses, the immune system becomes weaker, and the person becomes more susceptible to infections. The most advanced stage of HIV infection is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It can take 10-15 years for an HIV-infected person to develop AIDS; antiretroviral drugs can slow down the process even further.

Regional Assessment of HIV, STI and Other Health Needs of Transgender People in Asia and the Pacific
At the request of transgender delegates at the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific held in Busan, Republic of Korea, and in line with contextualizing implementation of the WHO global and regional guidance for HIV interventions among MSM and transgender people, the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific, in collaboration with APTN, UNDP, the Asia Pacific Coalition on Male Sexual Health (APCOM) and the WHO Regional Office for the South-East Asia Region, commissioned an assessment report on the state of transgender health in Asia and the Pacific.
'HIV/AIDS in the South-East Asia Region ' presents the current status of HIV/AIDS in the South-East Asia region based on the latest surveillance and programme data reported by Member States. Data are complemented by research findings as appropriate. The report highlights the progress made in prevention and control of HIV in the Region with an overview of strategic information systems and lists the challenges and future priorities.
