Queen's Speech May 2010

The Queen's Speech at the State Opening of Parliament sets out the Parliamentary agenda for the next year and highlights the Government's main priorities.

The Queen announced the following issues as included in the Government's legislative programme for the 2010-11 session of Parliament:

  • action to reduce the structural deficit and restore economic growth;
  • a fairer and simpler tax and benefits system;
  • modernisation of the Royal Mail;
  • limiting the number of non-European economic immigrants;
  • legislation in the fields of education, financial services regulation, police, local government and Parliament (including a reformed and elected second House);
  • a referendum on the Alternative Vote system;
  • the abolition of identity cards; and
  • repeal of unnecessary laws.
