This Act amends the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act to enable political parties to use positive discrimination measures in the selection of election candidates, should they wish to do so. The purpose of this legislation is to remove existing legal barriers to positive selection procedures, in order to reduce inequality in the numbers of men and women elected as candidates, and so help increase the representation of women in Parliament and other elected bodies. This Act applies to Great Britain; equivalent amendments are made to the Sex Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 1976 to cover Northern Ireland.
