Approved Document R: Physical Infrastructure For High-Speed Electronic Communications Networks
- National Building Specification (NBS)
- National Building Specification
This Approved Document supports requirement R1 of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010. Requirement R1 is to equip new buildings, and existing buildings subject to major renovation works, with the physical infrastructure to facilitate the future installation of copper cables, fibre or wireless devices capable of delivering broadband speeds greater than 30 Mbps.
The requirement is to provide only the in-building physical infrastructure, not the external infrastructure or any network cabling or equipment.
Approved Document R takes effect on 1 January 2017 for use in England. It does not apply to work started before 1 January 2017, or work subject to a building notice, full plans application or initial notice submitted before that date.
Requirement R1 transposes article 8 of Directive 2014/61/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 May 2014 on measures to reduce the cost of deploying high-speed electronic communications networks.
The Building Regulations are concerned with protecting the health and safety of those in and around buildings. Anyone intending to carry out building work in England and Wales is required by law to obtain building control approval to ensure Regulations are complied with.
The Approved Documents provide technical guidance on ways of complying with the Building Regulations. They are continuously revised in line with new legislation, therefore it is essential to keep fully updated with the latest editions and amendments.
