'Report on the Wildlife and Natural Environment Bill (NIA 5/09)' sets out the Committee for the Environment's consideration of the Wildlife and Natural Environment Bill. The Bill itself proposes to introduce new provisions and amends the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 No. 171 (N.I.2) ('the Wildlife Order') in order to reflect the increasing significance of protecting Northern Ireland's biodiversity and the need to continue to deter wildlife crime.

The Committee agreed with the Department that the wording of the primary legislation underpinning the new duty on public bodies to conserve biodiversity should be simple and straightforward. The Committee received confirmation from the Department that the duty would apply to all public bodies including, crown, cross-border and Northern Ireland Water and that it would be providing training for all those affected by the new duty.

The Committee expressed concern about the vague wording regarding the period required for reporting on the implementation of the biodiversity strategy and felt that an upper limit on the reporting period should be included on the face of the Bill.

In total 26 recommendations to the Bill were set out by the Committee.
