Tom Smith's Cricket Umpiring and Scoring is a practical guide to understanding and applying the Laws of Cricket. First written in 1980, it has become a long-running reference for umpires and scorers, and is sometimes referred to as 'the bible of cricket officiating'.
This 2026 edition is the most up to date interpretation of the Laws, covering all modern best practice for umpires and scorers. It incorporates the full 2026 edition of the Laws of Cricket, the 4th edition of the 2017 Code. Diagrams and images help explain the Laws in an easy-to-follow way, while interpretations of Law are combined with practical guidance.
Tom Smith founded the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers in 1953 and served as its General Secretary for 25 years. After his death in 1995, he left the guide to the Association, which continued to oversee its updating. It was passed on to MCC, who continue to keep it up to date as the sport, its Laws, and officiating evolve.
