This publication sets out best practice guidance on the building or refurbishment of dedicated in-patient facilities for older people, comprising intermediate care facilities and facilities for people with dementia. Sections cover: general design requirements; room spaces; engineering requirements; and cost information. It includes two cases studies of an intermediate care centre and a nursing home. The guidance takes account of the recommendations made in the National Service Framework for Older People, the NHS Plan and the Wanless report ('Securing our future health: taking a long-term view, 2002) in relation to health care services for older people, including the need for patient privacy and dignity, space and rehabilitation services.
