This document provides the Government's response to the Committee's second report (HLP 97/ HCP 668, session 2002-03; ISBN 0104002123) which set out the current position regarding House of Lords reform since its first report was published in December 2002 (HLP 17/HCP 171, session 2002/03, ISBN 010400116X). The Government's reply states that it remains the Government's policy that the remaining hereditary peers should be removed from the House of Lords. However, given the lack of consensus about introducing an elected element in the House of Lords, for the time being, the focus must be on making the present arrangements work as effectively as possible. The issue will be considered further over the summer period, and there will be further consultation in the autumn on proposals for a revised Appointments Commission.
