Designated Areas Series
Scotland contains some of Europe's most valued natural habitats and species. The 1992 EC Habitats Directive provides an opportunity for these areas to gain international recognition. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has published a series of guides to the designation of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs), explaining how they are selected and outlining the main implications of designation.
