The Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and its Codes of Practice are a vital part of the legislative framework that lays out police powers for combating crime. PACE Code C sets out the requirements for the detention, treatment and questioning of suspects not related to terrorism in police custody by police officers.
The Code has been issued by the Home Secretary under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and has been approved by Parliament. Copies of the Codes issued under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 must be readily available in all police stations for consultation by police officers, detained people and members of the public.
This Code applies to people in police detention after 00.00 on 2 June 2014, notwithstanding that their period of detention may have commenced before that time.
