The Laws of Cricket by the MCC

The Laws of Cricket define how the game is played. Maintained by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), they provide the framework for every cricket match played anywhere in the world.
The Laws have developed over more than 280 years to reflect changes in the game while preserving its core principles. MCC ensures that the Laws remain fit for purpose in the modern game, making changes when required while attempting to maintain consistency and simplicity for players, umpires and supporters.
The current Code, first published in 2017, was the largest set of changes in a generation, based on consultation with players, umpires and cricket administrators at all levels of the sport. This, the fourth edition of that Code, has built on those changes with two major purposes in mind; that the Laws are up to date for the modern world, and that they are as inclusive as possible. That has meant language that is not just gender neutral, but also simplified for those who don't speak English as their first language. Changes to the Laws on bats have been made to try and make the game more affordable, while several changes came in 2026 that were a reaction to a world where so much cricket, even at the lowest recreational level, is now filmed.
The Laws apply to all forms of cricket. Governing bodies and competition organisers can add playing regulations for specific formats, such as junior cricket, T20 cricket and Test matches, while keeping the fundamental principles of the game consistent.
