This report looks at the performance of the Medicines Control Agency in promoting and safeguarding public health through the regulation and provision of information of information on medicines. It concludes that the Agency has lacked dynamism and the quality of some of its information leaflets has been poor. It has also taken a narrow view of its role and has not developed a public profile. In April 2003 The Agency was merged with the Medical Devices Agency to form the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, it is hoped that this will be an opportunity to clarify and strengthen the regulatory function.
