Ambient Factors in the Workplace
An ILO Code of Practice
Ambient factors are those hazardous substances such as ionising radiation, electric and magnetic fields, optical radiation as well as noise, vibration, thermal conditions and humidity. The current code of practice provides valuable practical advice and guidelines for assessing, eliminating and controlling these workplace factors.
With the main aim of prevention of harm to workers, the code provides guidance on the roles and obligations of competent authorities and the responsibilities, duties and rights of employers and employees.
The guide reviews the various aspects of prevention and control for each of the factors, as well as material on hazard assessment and surveillance of workers' health and working environment. The code has a large focus on education and training and suggests programmes to ensure workers receive relevant, up-to-date information regarding their working conditions.
