It traces the history of ethics and biomedical research and examines the major issues that arise, such as the problems of obtaining consent, selecting participants in research or research that does not directly benefit its subjects.

It considers specific questions such as the use of placebos, clinical trials of new medicines or experimental treatments for cancer sufferers, and then looks at how the main international and national legal texts and ethical codes deal with these questions.
