Ethical Eye - Biomedical Research

This latest issue of 'Ethical Eye' considers the most recent scientific and technological developments, and examines the ways that these advances affect our daily lives.
This new volume in the Ethical Eye collection has been written by European doctors and lawyers. It traces the history of ethics and biomedical research and examines the major issues that arise, such as the problems of obtaining consent, selecting participants in research or research that does not directly benefit its subjects.
It considers specific questions such as the use of placebos, clinical trials of new medicines or experimental treatments for cancer sufferers, and then looks at how the main international and national legal texts and ethical codes deal with these questions. It also raises the issue of the internationalisation of medical research, the fact that 90% of the budget for this research is devoted to illnesses that concern "only" the wealthiest 10% of the population, and that research is sometimes conducted in countries that lack the resources to ensure that their own citizens can actually benefit from the results.
