This revised Code of Practice deals with the duties established under Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and is based on the principle that disabled people should not be discriminated against in their rights of access by those providing goods, facilities or services to the public and those selling, letting or managing premises. It has been written and produced by the Disability Rights Commission; it is a revision of the consultative draft published in May 2000 in order to take account of the further duties under the Act which will come into force in October 2004. These duties relate to the reasonable adjustments to premises required to enable disabled people to use the services available. The Code of Practice is being issued now in order to encourage service providers to be proactive and to assist them in preparing for their extended duties.
