DfEThe Department for Education was formed on 12 May 2010 and is responsible for education and children's services. Current aims of the Department include 'giving greater autonomy to schools', 'improving parental choice', 'offering more support for the poorest', 'whole system improvement', and 'great quality provision for children'. The Department aims to fulfil these aims through the Academies programme, allowing parents to set up their own schools, a pupil premium to address deep-rooted disadvantage, expanding Teach First, and bringing Sure Start back to its original purpose.
