The National Audit Office
The National Audit Office works on behalf of Parliament and the
taxpayer to hold government to account for the use of public money and to help
public services improve performance. The Comptroller and Auditor General, Amyas
Morse, is an Officer of the House of Commons and head of the National Audit
Office, which currently employs some 850 staff. He, and the National Audit
Office, are totally independent of Government. The work of the National Audit
Office saves the taxpayer millions of pounds every year: at least £9 for
every £1 spent running the Office.
