What is the Life in the UK test?
Everyone who applies to become a British Citizen or for permanent residence (also known as settlement or indefinite leave to remain) has to show their knowledge of the English language and of life in the United Kingdom in one of two ways. They can either take a special ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course, or they can take the Life in the UK test.
The test covers a number of topics including local customs and traditions, history of the United Kingdom and the laws and political systems that govern the country.
- The test is made up of 24 multiple choice questions
- The official questions are not published anywhere so you cannot see the exact questions you could be asked before the test
- Questions are chosen at random by computer
- You will have 45 minutes to complete the test
- The pass mark is around 75%
- The test costs £50
How do I prepare for the test?
Life in the UK tests
due to be taken before 25th March 2013 are based on
Life in the United Kingdom: A
Journey to Citizenship, 2nd Edition handbook. In order to be familiar
with the test experience and to ensure you are as prepared as possible for the
questions you should also read the
Life in the United
Kingdom: Official Citizenship Test Study Guide and
Passing the Life in the
UK Test: Official Practice Questions and Answers book. All these
titles are available as instantly downloadable PDFs which are ideal if you need
to start revising today. We have also created value packs so you can purchase
these items together and receive a discount.
Tests due to be taken
on or after the 25th of March 2013 are based on
Life
in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents, 3rd Edition
handbook. Ensure you are fully prepared to take your test by also
reading the
Life
in the United Kingdom: Official Practice Questions and Answers Book
and
Life
in the United Kingdom: Official Study Guide. These titles will also
be available as instantly downloadable PDFs which are ideal if you need to
