This Interpretation Guideline is designed to help producers of packaging and packaging materials to obtain certification to Issue 4 of the Standard. In September 2012 the ‘Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials: Issue 4’ became the first packaging Standard to complete the process of benchmarking by Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), this represents increased recognition for the more than 2000 sites around the world already Certificated. The Standard provides focus on quality and functional aspects of packaging which complement the established requirements of factory hygiene.
The guideline discusses the principles behind each of the requirements of the Standard clause by clause, assisting companies to effective implementation. It also includes a discussion on how to prepare for a BRC audit, what to expect during the audit and what actions are required following an audit, and to maintain certification.
This Interpretation Guideline is generally applicable to manufacturing sites and not intended for any specific industry sector. This Guideline is also useful for auditors and retailers who request their suppliers to adopt the Standard.
The Guidelines are designed to be used alongside the Standard and do not repeat information. A copy of the Standard is required for all suppliers undergoing a BRC Packaging & Packaging Materials audit.
