The primary functions of a sterile services department (SSD) of a hospital include the disassembly and disinfection of instruments used in surgical or medical procedures carried out in operating theatres and other clinical areas; and the preparation and packaging of sterile instrument packs and trays for clinical use, including device functionality and safety checks. This publication contains guidance on the planning and design of a sterile services department (SSD) and service requirements involved. It replaces and builds upon the 1993 edition (011321412X). Emphasis is placed upon centralising the decontamination of surgical instruments into purpose-built departments; operating in facilities with appropriately segregated processes and effective environmental control; and calculating optimum capacity to eradicate bottlenecks (using a simulation model given on an accompanying CD-ROM); cost information and engineering services.
