The international carriage of dangerous goods by rail within Europe is governed by Annex C of the Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF, from 'Convention de l'Organisation Intergouvernmentale pour les Transports Internationaux Ferroviaires'), and it is more commonly known as "RID". This edition is effective from 1 January 2011 and includes a CD-ROM containing a pdf of the text. It is divided into seven sections dealing with: general requirements; classification; dangerous goods list provisions and exemptions related to dangerous goods packed in limited quantities; use, construction and testing of packagings, intermediate bulk containers, large packagings and tanks; consignment procedures; and the conditions of carriage, loading, unloading and handling.
