Special Educational Needs and Disability Act, 2001

Publisher:
TSO (The Stationery Office)

Part 1 amends the 1996 Education Act to make changes to the existing special educational needs framework. It aims to strengthen the right of children with special educational needs to be educated in mainstream schools where parents want this and the interests of other children can be protected.

It also requires that Local Education Authorities (LEAs) make arrangements for services to provide parents of children with special educational needs with advice and information, and a means of resolving disputes with schools and LEAs. Part 2 deals with disability discrimination in education and will amend sections of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act.
