The British Standards Institution (BSI) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) outline the latest safety guidelines to ensure quality electrical installations in 'BS 7671:2008 IEE Wiring Regulations: Requirements for Electrical Installations'.
This is especially important as the Building Regulations Part P Electrical Safety now applies to all fixed electrical installations (for operation at low voltage or extra-low voltage) that are not controlled by the Electricity Supply Regulations 1988 or the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
BS7671 applies to the design, erection and verification of electrical installations, also additions and alterations to existing installations. Existing installations that have been installed in accordance with earlier editions of the Regulations may not comply with this edition in every respect. This does not necessarily mean that they are unsafe for continued use or require upgrading.
BS7671 includes changes necessary to maintain technical alignment with harmonisation documents devised by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).
This standard came into effect in July 2008 and therefore, installations designed after 30 June 2008 must comply with BS 7671:2008.
