The announcement on 5 June 2009 of the merger of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) with the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) to create a new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, causes the Committee some concerns on the future cross-departmental scrutiny of science and technology. The Committee cannot see that it will have enough resources to monitor the expenditure, administration and policy of the new Department alongside the examination of science across government. It calls on the Leader of the House of Commons to propose the creation of a Science and Technology Committee alongside the new Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, to bring forward the necessary standing order changes and let the House decide the matter.
