The role of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is to promote both foreign investment into the UK and support UK exporters. This report looks at both this role and the key aspects of its strategy, in particular it looks at: UKTI's five sector strategies, R & D programme; the role of regional development agencies; the focus on emerging economies; providing the skills to market UK plc; and charging for services. Although it is only four years old UKTI has already had three separate strategies. The Committee support many aspects of the new five year strategy and hope it will be given the time to be implemented without further major changes in direction. However it is important that UKTI is able to demonstrate that it is adding value through its work. The Committee is also concerned that the role of English regional development agencies in promoting inward investment is diluting the UK brand and causing confusion for potential foreign investors.
