At the beginning of Parliament the Science and Technology Committee (STC) undertook "to scrutinise major appointments made by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry" within its remit. On 22 October 2003 Professor Sir Alan Wilson was appointed as the first Director General for Higher Education at the Department for Education and Skills. While his role is primarily in the remit of the Education and Skills Committee many of his responsibilities were seen to be of direct relevance to the STC, in particular the research component of the university block grant. Professor Sir Alan Wilson was invited to give evidence to the STC on 22 March 2004. The committee concluded that Professor Sir Alan Wilson, though certainly well qualified, has certain knowledge gaps. Sir Alan offered to return to the Committee in 6 months time so that progress can be reviewed.
