Family Food – A Report on the 2005-06 Expenditure and Food Survey - Front

This is the latest in a series of annual reports based on the Expenditure and Food Survey, which asks all household members above the age of seven to keep a diary of all food expenditure. The report shows trends in purchases by type of food and also converts these purchases to show energy and nutrient intakes.

The increase in expenditure on food in 2005-6 was below the rate of inflation. However the most remarkable change was a substantial increase in both the purchase of fruit and vegetables and large drop in the purchase of confectionery. In spite of this there is a small increase in the energy intake per person and the intake of fats and saturated fatty acids remain well above recommended limits.

As well as the overall trends the report also contains tables of geographic and demographic analysis.
