Science Teaching in Schools: Follow-up (HL 167)

Following on from the Committee's earlier report ('Science Teaching in Schools (HL 257)' - ISBN 0104009470) on science and mathematics teaching in secondary schools in England, this report sets out the Government's response to that report and the Committee's commentary on that response.

Issues discussed include:

  • the take-up of science and mathematics at GCSE and A-level;

  • the provision of careers advice to students;

  • student attitude and choice;

  • problems in the recruitment and retention of teachers; and

  • the quality of teaching methods and the role of continuing professional development.

The Committee concludes that, given that the booming economies of China and India are supported by increasing numbers of well-qualified science graduates, science teaching in schools is vital to support innovation and growth in the UK economy.
