Radioactive Waste Management: An Update (HL Paper 109)

'Radioactive Waste Management: An Update (HL 109)' examines the Government's proposals for radioactive waste management following the final recommendations of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM), both of which are available to download below.

The report focuses on the arrangements for implementing the next stage of the Managing Radioactive Waste Safely (MRWS) programme. The Government has accepted CoRWM's recommendation that geological disposal is the best available long-term approach but has watered down the proposal for an independent body to oversee the programme: the Committee has concerns about this and thinks that an independent body would be desirable.

The Committee also expresses concern that the progress in radioactive waste management has been characterised by years of procrastination followed by unseemly haste, and calls on the Government to delay the forthcoming consultation document until the new CoRWM has been appointed and has had time to consider the proposals.
