Once the audited accounts of each department have been laid before Parliament, the Committee of Public Accounts meet to consider reports on Departments that have overspent. The Committee then recommends whether Parliament should approve further grants and regularise the excess expenditure or make recommendations for improvements. The overall conclusion was that excess expenditure was greater in 2004-05 than 2003-04 but the results of both years represent a considerable improvement on previous years.
