Due to its geographical location, good air transport links to other parts of the UK, to continental Europe and beyond, are vital to the maintenance and development of a healthy economy in Northern Ireland. The Committee's report examines a range of issues relating to air transport services in Northern Ireland, including the development of capacity at existing airports; the specific challenges facing Northern Ireland; the effectiveness of the Route Development Fund; and the potential impact for Northern Ireland of wider air transport issues on the island of Ireland. Findings of the Committee include that the Government's White Paper on aviation (Cm 6046, ISBN 0101604629, published in December 2003) provides a sound basis for the future development of air services generally in Northern Ireland, although two key issues need to be addressed relating to the development of Belfast City and City of Derry airports.
