The fishing industry in the UK is an important part of the economy, with one of the largest fleets and processing industries in Europe. However, the industry has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the effects of quota cuts and decommissioning resulting in decline in activity in many traditional fishing communities. The Committee's report examines the recommendations of the Strategy Unit's final report on the medium to long-term issues facing the UK's fishing industry ("Net benefits: a sustainable and profitable future for UK fishing", available from http://www.strategy.gov.uk/output/Page3854.asp) published in March 2004.
