The global automotive industry is dominated by a small number of very large vehicle producers who operate throughout the world, characterised by a competitive environment which has led to pressure to constantly strive for innovation and efficiency in products and manufacturing. Despite a number of high profile plant closures, the UK retains a successful automotive industry. It has an established reputation for specialist engineering and design, although this solid base may not secure plants from closing. The Committee's report examines the current state of the car retail sector and prospects for vehicle production. It highlights a number of issues that UK companies need to address, including raising workforce skills, particularly amongst components producers; and investing in R&D activities in order to innovate and improve performance. The industry considers that the fact that the UK has not adopted the Euro has disadvantaged producers based here. The report also raises concerns that UK consumers are not getting a good deal in purchasing new cars or in car repair and servicing.
