This publication is a Government and OFCOM response to the Committees report on the Broadband market for internet access. The Government accepts the view that strong competition is preferred, so broadband is widely available to as many people as possible. It is also the view that sustained investment in existing networks should also be encouraged, especially promoting other broadband strategies such as wireless, satellite and powerline, as well as the 3G mobile technologies. The question of choice is an important matter, and OFCOM are to undertake a review of telecommunications in general. The Government does not accept the Committees proposition that BT will slow the progress of broadband roll-out to gain more public subsidy, because of competition for supply of broadband. The Government agreed with the view that a greater awareness of the benefits of broadband to both business and individuals should be promoted.
