The scale of the impact of nanotechnology on the world economy will fully merit governmental effort to stimulate industrial activity and academic research. However this report finds that the DTI is guilty of failing to build on an earlier, successful nanotechnology programme. The Committee regard the DTI's response the Taylor Report, and the Micro and Nano technology Manufacturing Initiative, to be inadequate. The money would be better spent on creating one or two nanofabrication facilities rather than the current prospect of disparate and unfocussed facilities. It is not too late and a programme that maximises the impact of the investment could still make the UK a major player in nanotechnology.
