This annual publication presents data covering trends in the prison population and system. This edition contains chapters dealing with: the prison population in 2002; remand prisoners; young people; adult prisoners under sentence; life sentence prisoners; ethnic group and nationality; religion; offences and punishments; reconviction of prisoners discharged from prison in 1999; parole and home detention curfew; prison regimes, conditions and costs; Home Office research on prison related topics; and a directory of related internet sites. Findings include that during 2002: the average population in custody was 70,860, the highest recorded average level and an increase of seven per cent on the previous year; the average remand population in 2002 was 14 per cent higher than in 2001; and the average number of female prisoners increased by 15 per cent during 2001-02.
