Control of immigration: statistics Unite

Immigration control regulates the entry and refusal of entry of passengers into the UK; the conditions of stay and any variations following entry; settlement and deportation. This report contains data relating to immigration into the UK in 2001, as well as selected data for earlier years. Sections cover: pre-entry control abroad; entry control at ports; asylum; after-entry control; grants of settlement; enforcement of immigration law; appeals against immigration control decisions; and net migration by nationality. Findings for 2001 include: 1) the number of international arrivals from outside the Common Travel Area fell slightly to 88.1 million with 12.8 million non-EEA nationals; 2) asylum applications, excluding dependants, fell 11 per cent to 71,365, with the highest number of applications from nationals of Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Turkey; and 3) the total number of persons removed from the UK was 49,135, an increase of five per cent on the previous year.
