Statistics for Education

This publication contains data from child protection registers from all 150 English local authorities with social services responsibilities, covering the year ending 31 March 2003.

Main findings include that out of a total of 570,220 referrals, 22 per cent were repeat referrals previously made within the last year, a fall of two per cent on the year ending March 2002.

There were 26,600 children on child protection registers as of March 2003, just over three per cent more than a year ago, but 18 per cent lower than in 1993. This total included more boys than girls, a reversal of the position a decade ago.
