The 2003 edition of this publication presents updated information on the teaching force in England, generally to March 2002. It contains data for teachers pay for England and Wales. Detailed tables relate to: initial teacher training; new entrants; teachers entering and leaving the profession; qualified teachers in service in the maintained schools sector; teachers pay; promotions; sickness absence; retirements and vacancies. From 2001 onwards the coverage of many of the tables has changed slightly from previous editions. Many of the tables which use data from the DTR previously covered teachers in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools, but now cover all teachers in the maintained schools sector, including special schools and pupil referral units. Similarly many tables previously included small numbers of teachers without Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but now cover teachers with QTS only.
