This bulletin contains information about day care facilities for children under eight in England as at 31 March 2000 and comparative data for previous years. It is compiled from returns submitted by local authorities the information collected covers various types of day care facilities for children under eight: day nurseries, playgroups or pre-schools, childminders, out of school clubs, holiday schemes and family centres. Figures are collected on the number of providers of day care facilities, places provided and children receiving local authority provision. The returns reveal that between 1990 and 2000 the number of day nurseries has risen steadily; there were 7,500 day nurseries in 2000, compared with 7,000 in 1999 and 2,900 in 1990. The places provided by these nurseries reached 264,200 in 2000, compared with 247,700 in 1999 and 87,500 in 1990. Between 1999 and 2000 the number of registered childminders fell by eight per cent to 75,600 and the number of places with childminders fell by five per cent to 320,400.
