Well-lit Highways - Front

The importance of public lighting maintenance to the integrated transport network, to public amenity and safety, and to crime reduction, has never been more widely recognised.

The first of three codes of practice, Well-lit Highways provides local authorities with guidance on lighting management, creating a strong foundation for a positive and lasting road lighting maintenance policy.

Adoption of the recommendations will help the delivery of Best Value services and although this code is specifically intended for road lighting, the principles are equally applicable to other forms of exterior lighting.

The Code is intended to apply throughout the United Kingdom and seeks to harmonise public lighting maintenance practice whilst retaining scope for local discretion and diversity amongst devolved and local governments.
