'Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics 2009' (also known as 'DUKES') continues a series that began in 1950 with the Ministry of Fuel and Power Statistical Digest for the years 1948 and 1949.

This 2009 issue updates the figures given by the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) in the 2008 issue (ISBN 9780115155222).

The publication consists of seven chapters:

  • Energy

  • Solid fuels and derived gases

  • Petroleum

  • Gas

  • Electricity

  • Combined heat and power

  • Renewable sources of energy.

Annexes cover: energy and commodity balances, conversion factors and calorific acronyms; further sources of UK energy publications; and major events in the energy industry.

Chapters contain details on the production and consumption of individual fuels, presented using commodity balances, which illustrate the flow of a fuel from production to final consumption. Commodity balances are then combined in an energy balance, showing the interaction between different fuels.

General energy statistics are presented in a table, revealing energy consumption by final users and an analysis of energy consumption by main industrial groups. Surveys conducted by AEA Energy & Environment on behalf of DECC estimate the contribution made by combined heat and power and renewable energy-to-energy production and consumption in the UK.
