This bulletin examines the range of issues involved in the design of school buildings, in order to promote a positive learning environment which serves the needs of pupils and the wider community. It considers how to improve the design of existing schools, as well as ensure that new school buildings are well designed and built.
It provides practical advice and contains a range of illustrated examples taken mostly from real school projects.
The bulletin is divided into three sections:
-
Part One considers the key issues for the 21st century school, such as changes to the curriculum and the growth of IT, lifelong learning, and the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
-
Part Two examines the design implications for these developments relating to the use of space, environmental factors, planning issues and sustainability.
-
Part Three considers how to achieve design quality and value for money in the building process.
