Spatial planning is becoming increasingly important in order to deliver positive social, economic, and environmental outcomes within a community. This Planning Policy Statement (PPS) sets out government policy on local development frameworks. This PPS reflects the lessons learned from the first three years of operation of the new planning system in England brought in by the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004.
The PPS explains what local spatial planning is and how communities can benefit from the process. It also sets out what the key ingredients of local spatial plans are and the key government policies on how they should be prepared. The PPS should be taken into account by local planning authorities in preparing development plan documents and other local development documents.
